Welcome to Grammar Matters
April 12th 2008 06:36
I'm starting this blog so that I can have a record of all the things which irk me about the written word (or rather how its misused), I hope that it will also edify or entertain others of like mind! Whether your a seasoned writer or a novice, the language is always changing, so I think it's always useful to talk about: grammer, spelling, word usage/conventions, and even pronounciation. You never know what you could of missed in English class in school, right? I hope to create the first real post here in the next couple of days.
P.S. Did you catch the errors in the paragraph above? I put at least eight in there.

Your intentional errors covered a few of my pet peeves as well as well as giving me a giggle. I can forgive poor spelling even though in light of spellcheck fewer errors should be made. I even make the odd grammatical error in my own posts as sometimes being grammatically correct can make informal writing seem stilted but its and it's and your and you're send me bananas. As does the misuse of their, there and they're. Arghhh!
I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

@katyzzz: LOL
@Cheryl J: Yes, I make the distinction between web writing and formal writing too. I'm not too bothered by 'mistakes' online, aside from things like you're/your and IM-speak.
@Morgan Bell: Your comment didn't kill me, no. My standards are relaxed for the internet, heh. But if I were to read apostrophe-less articles in the newspaper or something, that would be a different story.
@DeAnne: Haha, I didn't think that anyone would think I was serious! But I'm glad you stuck around to the end of the post instead of clicking away in frustration.

Writers In Writing (and other writing)
I like how you wrote 'I put at least eight in there'. Room for error perhaps? I counted eight and then Morgan mentioned the spelling of 'grammar' which gave me nine. Without my grammar book handy I don't know if I'm right or not so you will have to provide them in a future post just to ease the suspense.
The topic is one of my own pet favourites so I shall be sure to keep reading. I find I am not even as tolerant of internet errors as yourself. However, after posting a couple of errors on some Orble comments which I was unable to retrieve I have had to relax a little.
Looking forward to more.

@Jayne Kearney: I said "at least 8" because I think there are a few in there that may be a matter of style or preference, as opposed to outright 'errors'. But I'll post my answers and see if anyone agrees or disagrees with them.
