Welcome to Grammar Matters

April 12th 2008 06:36
I'm starting this blog so that I can have a record of all the things which irk me about the written word (or rather how its misused), I hope that it will also edify or entertain others of like mind! Whether your a seasoned writer or a novice, the language is always changing, so I think it's always useful to talk about: grammer, spelling, word usage/conventions, and even pronounciation. You never know what you could of missed in English class in school, right? I hope to create the first real post here in the next couple of days.

P.S. Did you catch the errors in the paragraph above? I put at least eight in there.

Without having the concentration powers to actually read your post, did you perhaps mean Grandma matters?

If it's Grandma, I'll be back.

I love it, what a great idea!

Your intentional errors covered a few of my pet peeves as well as well as giving me a giggle. I can forgive poor spelling even though in light of spellcheck fewer errors should be made. I even make the odd grammatical error in my own posts as sometimes being grammatically correct can make informal writing seem stilted but its and it's and your and you're send me bananas. As does the misuse of their, there and they're. Arghhh!

I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

hmmm i can see you spelled grammar with an "e" and you used "your" instead of "you're" (that one actually drives me nuts) . . . i presume theres something about the parenthesis and commas and possibly the exclamations?

im probably killing you with the way ive just written that! haha

as you can see im personally trying to phase out apostrophes in the english language . . . its been my mission for some time now

cool topic, im sure it will make an interesting read!

Have to admit, I was becoming irked by reading the post. I was very relieved to see the P.S. at the end. I only counted seven errors though, so I suppose there's at least one that doesn't bother me. You didn't use my biggest peeve - the singular use of plural pronouns. I'm sure I will enjoy reading your posts.

Thanks for dropping by, everyone!

@katyzzz: LOL

@Cheryl J: Yes, I make the distinction between web writing and formal writing too. I'm not too bothered by 'mistakes' online, aside from things like you're/your and IM-speak.

@Morgan Bell: Your comment didn't kill me, no. My standards are relaxed for the internet, heh. But if I were to read apostrophe-less articles in the newspaper or something, that would be a different story.

@DeAnne: Haha, I didn't think that anyone would think I was serious! But I'm glad you stuck around to the end of the post instead of clicking away in frustration.

Make no mistake, the mistakes are the best pits.

Great post Irene.
I like how you wrote 'I put at least eight in there'. Room for error perhaps? I counted eight and then Morgan mentioned the spelling of 'grammar' which gave me nine. Without my grammar book handy I don't know if I'm right or not so you will have to provide them in a future post just to ease the suspense.
The topic is one of my own pet favourites so I shall be sure to keep reading. I find I am not even as tolerant of internet errors as yourself. However, after posting a couple of errors on some Orble comments which I was unable to retrieve I have had to relax a little.
Looking forward to more.
Jayne

@Norm: Yes, and some mistakes are better than others!

@Jayne Kearney: I said "at least 8" because I think there are a few in there that may be a matter of style or preference, as opposed to outright 'errors'. But I'll post my answers and see if anyone agrees or disagrees with them.
